History Day At Peru State College

On Wednesday, March 3, Peru State College hosted the 26th Annual History Day: "Innovations in History: Impact and Change."

This year's gathering attracted 259 Junior High and High School students and featured 151 entries from 11 school districts and 17 teachers.

The 259 students topped last year's record of 250 when the college celebrated the event's 25th Anniversary at Peru State College.

This year's even included 50 judges and 27 judges' assistants and brought back to Peru State former students, staff members, and teachers. All helped to make this year's event another wonderful success.

The theme for 2011 is: "Debate & Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences." Next year's District Contest falls on Wednesday, March 2, 2011.

I loaded quite a few photographs, including shots of all the prize winners.

Special thanks to PSC President Dan Hanson, for he had to endure my taking multiple shots of all the prize winners--he probably saw dots for hours after awarding the last medal.

More Dr. Seuss in Tarkio

For the sixth year in a row, Chet Harper and I visited Tarkio Elementary School in Missouri, this time on March 2, Dr. Seuss' birth date.

As he has for quite a few visits, Chet read from Cat in the Hat.

I got to read one of my favorite Seuss titles, Hop on Pop. And after this reading, the Kindergarten and First Grade audience hopped and popped.

You can see and hear some of the hopping and popping antics on the video I created. And I uploaded a series of images for everyone to enjoy and download.

The video also contains a couple short sequences and a series of photographs, including shots of the youngsters' showing off their creations after watching a DVD of Yertle the Turtle.

Chet and I concluded the two-hour celebration with our final Green Eggs and Ham insanity of the season.



After our show, the youngsters walk to the cafeteria to eat green eggs and ham, topping off the birthday cheer with cupcakes.

We always enjoy our annul trips to Tarkio, and I hope later this spring to visit the school for some Feathers and Verses fun.

Calvert Elementary Goes To The Birds

As the preceding photographs and the uploaded shots indicate, the sixty third graders and I enjoyed our time together on Monday, March 1.


As happened when I payed a visit last spring to the elementary school in Auburn, Nebraska, the students watched pictures of birds, learned some bird songs, and then used their imagination with the coloring-books images I supplied.


They came up with some colorful creations.

The new wing of Calvert Elementary school is beautiful, and I look forward to another visit and more fun in Third Grade.
